About Rajam
Rajam Shanker (b.1952) is a graduate in Carnatic Music from the Telugu University, Hyderabad and has completed her Postgraduate program Sangeeta Alankara with distinction from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, the National Music University. She has continued a long association with this noted institution as teacher, moderator and music examiner for senior level assessments. She has been tutoring music students between the ages of 6 to 60 for over two decades, emphasizing on her students receiving a firm foundation and detailed grasp of Carnatic Music theory, grammar and practice.
Rajam Shanker and her associates are collaborating with medical, professional and paramedical personnel in the employment of Indian Classical Music in Music Therapy and their work has shown perceivably positive results in treating children and adult clients with Autism, Hyperactivity, Slow Learning and related Neurological Disabilities. Therapists from other disciplines, both Indian and Overseas have shown keen interest in her group and client specific therapeutic intervention methodology.
She is a Consultant Music Therapist associated with institutions in Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and New Delhi dealing specifically with Autism, Healing, Curative Education and other related neurological disabilities in children and adults. She is a Life Member of NADA Centre for Music Therapy & Research India and a Member of the WFMT, World Federation of Music Therapy and actively associated with other Music Therapy and Research organizations in India and abroad.
Her work has received critical and popular acclaim in both, the print and visual media and she has delivered talks and participated in live discussions on a number of Regional Television Channels, FM Radio, at National and International Seminars speaking on the significance of Music Therapy and scope of its application. She has made presentations at workshops held at the School of Health Sciences, University of Hyderabad, School of Mental Health at VIMHANS New Delhi, Apollo Hospital Hyderabad and was invited to the European Music Therapy Congress 2010, Cadiz Spain. She has made presentations at a number of other professional training institutions, educational institutions, Senior Citizens’ welfare associations and clubs.
Rajam Shanker has traveled widely, to domestic and overseas destinations, interacted with amateur and professional music professionals and therapists in various disciplines on different aspects and impact of Indian Classical Music. Affectionate, caring and supportive wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, very patient counselor to young and not-so-young people, active in social, cultural and public service organizations.
